Organization of the Kilhoti Chapter, NSDAR
The original Sachem Sequoyah Chapter was organized in McAlester, Oklahoma, on November 13, 1912, with 21 members. The group met in the parlor of the Doss House. This chapter disbanded on February 1, 1928.
The Kilihoti Chapter, NSDAR, was organized June 9, 1966, in McAlester, Oklahoma, in the old Choctaw Nation. A Choctaw word was chosen for the name of the chapter which incorporated the ideals and aspirations which the chapter members wished to be their motivating force. Kilihoti means "ONWARD WITH PROGRESS." Kilihoti held its first luncheon meeting on that date at the McHoma Lodge in McAlester. Honorary State Regent Helen Knowles Race (1962-1964) of Shawnee, Oklahoma, was the Organizing State Regent. Honorary State Regent Helen Race installed the following ladies as officers for the new chapter: Mrs. Otis S. Duran, regent; Mrs. Margaret Adams, vice regent; Mrs. Stanton N. Stallings, secretary; Mrs. Grover C. Phillips, treasurer; and Mrs. James G. Mitchell, registrar.
Among the other 18 charter members present at the first meeting were: Mrs. Arch Thompson, Mrs. W. E. McGowan, Mrs. James Newman, Mrs. Bryant G. Ward, Mrs. L.S. Willour, Mrs. Harold G. Minyard, Mrs. Lawrence Newman, Mrs. M. L. Henry, Miss Mildred Toaz, Mrs. Olin V. Lewis, Mrs. R. O. Green, Mrs. Lowell G. Rogers, and Mrs. Jack Shields. These ladies came from five cities in Oklahoma, including: McAlester, Kiowa, Hartshorne, Eufaula, and Oklahoma City. Mrs. Duran worked diligently completing proper paperwork for the group to become members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and for the chapter to be set up according to the national bylaws.
